F.A.Q.

What is freewriting?

Freewriting is a writing exercise wherein you write non-stop for a period of time worrying about typos, grammar, judging thoughts or second guessing anything. It’s a great way to get the brain firing and get thoughts and ideas out onto the paper. It’s been known to help with writer’s block, promote creativity and collect thoughts. Since it can be done in a few minutes and by definition, requires no more time/energy, it’s a great way to get in the habit of writing daily. JumpOff kicks off your freewriting session with a random, often absurd, prompt to promote creativity.

How does it work?

Just click a button and you’ll receive a randomly generated prompt to get the brain firing. Then freewrite until it stops you. We call these exercises “Flows.” The purpose of the exercise is stream-of-consciousness writing. Don’t overthink, don’t edit, just write the first thing that comes to your mind and keep typing until the time is up.

Why can’t I delete text or go back?

This is intentional. By removing the ability to edit your flows, fix your typos, or second-guess your word choice, we free you up to stay in a state of flow. When the exercise is done, you can edit all you want, but for now, just keep getting thoughts from brain to screen. We hope to help inspire creative writing of all sorts, and make writing as simple as possible, so you can do it every day.

What happens to the writing?

It’s up to you. When you’re done with one prompt you can click done to start another Flow, or open your writing as a Post draft and edit, shape or add to it. At the end of every Flow, JumpOff will save all your writing and the prompts that inspired it. You can access/edit old Flows in the My Flows section.

Can I publish Flows?

Not yet. Flows are writing exercises that aren’t meant to be published themselves, but from the Flow’s edit page, you can clone the flow as a Post, then publish that post.

What are the stars?

You can star Flows for any reason you like, but we like to star the writing we want to revisit. Maybe we want to develop an idea further, or create a blog post, short story, novel or piece of art inspired by one of our Flows.

What are the numbers in the dashboard widget?

The “Flow Streak” number is your current number of consecutive days doing at least one Flow exercise. The “Last 30 Days” number is the number of Flow exercises completed in the last 30 days. Simple enough, huh?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/1″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”40″][heading]

Once you click “Prompt Me” a random 3 word phrase will be generated and displayed, often weird, nonsensical combinations that bring to mind strange imagery. Start writing!

You’ll notice you can’t delete anything or move your cursor back, this is intentional. The goal here is stream-of-consciousness writing. Don’t worry about typos, grammar, or editing, just write the first things that come to your mind and get into a state of flow. You’re not trying to write a polished product, you’re just getting the brain firing and getting thoughts out. It’s the first step in the writing process![/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”60″][image_with_animation image_url=”3326″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” img_link_large=”yes” el_class=”jumpoff_screenshot”][vc_column_text]During a Flow you can hover over the eye in the top left to show the timer again, or click the End Flow arrow in the top right to end the Flow.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”60″][image_with_animation image_url=”3327″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” img_link_large=”yes” el_class=”jumpoff_screenshot”][vc_column_text]When the Flow’s timer is up you have 3 choices:

  • Star a post: This is for your use, marking the Flow as one with ideas you’d like to return to later.
  • Done: Finishes Flow so you can start another, or move on. The Flow is saved for you to return to later on My Flows page.
  • Edit as Post: Saves Flow as a Post and takes you to the edit page in case you want to turn it into a blog post. It will also be archived as a Flow on My Flows page.
